How Much Are Extra Diabetic Supplies Worth?

The four things that decide the price

1. The product, and its exact code

Two boxes that look almost identical can be worth different amounts. Dexcom G7 sensors come in a 10-day and a 15-day version, and the only reliable way to tell them apart is the reference code printed on the box label — something like STP-FT-012. Omnipod 5 pods come in a Dexcom-compatible version and a Libre-compatible version, printed in the top right corner of the front of the box, and the two are worth roughly $50 a box apart.

This is why every quote starts with the code rather than the brand name. If you can read the label, you can get an accurate price in under a minute.

2. Months left before expiration

This is the single biggest factor. Supplies are priced in tiers based on how far away the earliest expiration date is, and the difference between a box with seven months left and one with three months left can be more than half the value.

The reason is simple: whoever buys them next needs time to get them to someone who will use them. Short-dated stock is harder to move, so it is worth less. If you have supplies sitting in a cupboard, they are quietly losing value every month you wait.

3. Sealed and undamaged

Boxes have to be factory sealed. Once a box is opened it cannot be resold, no matter how untouched the contents look. A sealed box that is dented, crushed or water-marked still has value, just less — damage is priced separately rather than being an automatic no.

4. How many you have

Larger lots are worth slightly more per unit, because they cost the same to inspect and ship whether there are two or twenty. Quantity bonuses typically start at five units and increase again at ten.

What each product pays

Prices shown are the most we pay, for well-dated supplies in the best condition. Test strips need at least nine months of dating to be sellable at all.

What a real lot looks like

A few worked examples, so the numbers are less abstract:

• Nine Dexcom G7 15-day sensors expiring in eight months. That is the top dating tier, and nine units earns a quantity bonus — around $405 for the lot.
• Five boxes of Omnipod 5 pods, Dexcom version, expiring in six months. One tier down from the top — around $500.
• Four FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensors with five months left. Around $120.
• Three boxes of Accu-Chek Aviva Plus 100ct with ten months left. Around $90.

What lowers the value, and what makes it zero

These reduce what you get but still leave a sellable product:

• A dented, crushed or water-marked box that is still sealed
• Fewer than four or five months before expiration, depending on the product
• A single unit rather than a lot

These make supplies unsellable:

• An opened box. Once the factory seal is broken there is no resale value.
• Anything past its expiration date.
• Supplies obtained through Medicare, Medicaid or another government program. Reselling those can be fraud, and no legitimate buyer will touch them.
• Recalled Omnipod lots. Insulet has issued more than one recall, and lot numbers from those batches cannot be bought or resold. Insulet replaces them free.
